Promotion is a vertical hierarchical movement of an employee within the organisation. In other words, it is the advancement of an employee from one job position to another job position that has a higher salary range, a higher-level job title, enhanced status, and, often, more and higher level job responsibilities in an organization.
A promotion is usually handed to an employee who has displayed exceptional performance or has developed the appropriate skills and knowledge necessary to take on the higher job responsibility. Thats why, it’s important to realize that we must create and manage our own career path through one or multiple organizations. As in today’s changing business environment we may need to make a lateral move to position ourself for a later upward move. And remember that a promotion is not always an upward path. But for the organisation, promotions are necessary as it develops competitive spirit and inculcate the zeal in the employees to enhance their skill and knowledge.It also has an in-built motivational value as it elevates the authority, power and status of an employee within an organisation and also removes feelings of stagnation and frustration.
